Matt is a qualified ECB tutor, level 3 coach and former professional cricketer. He spent 12 years as a professional cricketer with Middlesex initially then joining Hampshire also representing England U19’s in 8 test matches and 5 one day internationals against New Zealand, Pakistan and touring Australia.
He has played and coached at various clubs around the world including clubs in Australia and New Zealand.
After retiring Matt coached and played in the Southern league and has worked with the Dorset cricket board overseeing the Emerging Player Programme (EPP) specifically geared towards boys and girls looking to progress in to the professional game. Many local players currently playing professional cricket have gone through this program.
Alongside this role since 2014 Matt has been the Director of cricket at Canford School a position that allows him to work with relative beginners up to players looking for a career in the game.
My coaching philosophy is that as coaches, we are there for our players. We strive to take a player-centred approach to coaching where the needs of each player come first.
The real test is if the players are enjoying themselves, looking forward to coming back next week, learning, and playing hard but fair. In their approach to coaching, coaches can ask questions, set up situations which encourage players to solve problems and can share the ownership of the team by allowing players to have a role in decision making. The result of such an approach will be players who feel valued and respected, are innovative, self-aware and less coach dependent. Coaching is about developing better people, no matter what age or ability, not just better cricketers.
